Tom Griffiths 1st Trumpet

Tom has attended the ‘Junior Guildhall School of Music’ for the last four years studying trumpet with teacher Richard Jones as well as jazz piano and conducting. At Junior Guildhall Tom is Principal Cornet of the Brass Band and Principal Trumpet of the Symphony Orchestra.  Tom play’s the trumpet in many ensembles outside of Junior Guildhall.  These include ‘The West Chiltington Silver Band,’ which Tom joined when he was just 9 and has been Principal Cornet of for the last five years. Being Principal Trumpet for the West Sussex County Youth Orchestra and soloist in the Big Band make Tom a huge contributor to his own county’s music service.  This as been recognised as Tom has been awarded the Worthing Symphony Orchestra Student Award for 2010.  Tom also enjoys competing as a soloist. In 2008 he won the Arun Young Musician of the Year.


The end of 2009 saw Tom gain a place at the Royal College of Music in London where Tom will have the opportunity to learn at the highest level from world-class professors, training him for the real world and life as a professional musician.


Philip Wimble 2nd Trumpet

Philip Wimble began playing trumpet and piano at the age of 7.  His trumpet teachers have included Richard Baker and Edward Hawkins.


Phil is now at the Junior Guildhall School of Music and Drama where he is a pupil of Trumpet teacher Richard Jones.  Philip also studies Jazz at Guildhall with Ollie Weston. Philip plays all genres of music from classical through to jazz.  Phil is a prominent member the West Sussex County Youth Orchestra and also lead trumpeter in the County Youth Big Band. Phil also plays cornet in the West Chiltington Silver Band. He has performed at the Royal Albert Hall, Birmingham Symphony Hall, St Martin in the fields, Royal Festival Hall as well as various Sussex venues including Chichester Festival Theatre, Arundel Cathedral and the Hawth Theatre in Crawley. Philip has also played for Chichester Festival Youth Theatre in their recent production of ‘Toad of Toad Hall’. He also teaches the trumpet. Philip plans to study music at university.


Jenny Buckham Horn

Jenny began playing brass instruments at the age of 8, learning Tenor Horn. Having gained grade four by the age of 11 years she transferred to the French Horn and began taking lessons from Trevor Denyer. 


Jenny has now completing her second year at the Junior Guildhall School of Music, where she is taught by David Bentley, and is a member of the Junior Guildhall Symphony Orchestra, Brass Band and various other wind ensembles. Jenny is principal of the West Sussex County Youth Orchestra, which she has played with since the age of 12. She has played at Birmingham Symphony Hall and the Royal Albert Hall. She also plays in other ensembles including the Worthing Youth Brass Band and West Sussex County Wind Band. Jenny has studied piano since she was 6 years old and had a few lessons on the double bass when she was fourteen.


Although music plays a large part in Jenny’s life, it remains a hobby as she is currently studying Sciences at Worthing College and has been offered a place at the Royal  Veterinary College.


Alistair Gibson Trombone

Alistair Gibson started playing the trombone when he was just 6 ½ years old. In the past ten years has been taught by Kevin Webb, Mike Saville, Mark Templeton and Rob Burgess.


He is currently studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama Junior Department where he is principle Trombone of both the Symphony Orchestra and Brass Band. Alistair is currently being coached on Trombone by Professors Rob Burgess. Alistair holds the Prozone music Competitive trombone scholarship. He is also studying for his A levels at South Downs College in Portsmouth, under the Headship of Peter Rhodes. Alistair is not only studying trombone but also euphonium and voice and piano.  Recently he was one of the soloists in a performance of Mendelssohn's ‘Elijah’.


Previously he has performed in the National Festival of Music for Youth, BBC Proms and in Barbican Young Orchestra, under the direction of Sir Colin Davis.  Alistair is also principal Trombone of the West Sussex County Youth Orchestra and lead Trombone of the Big Band.  As a result, Alistair’s hard work for his county has been recognised by him being awarded the Worthing Symphony Orchestra Student Award for 2009.


Oliver Brooks Tuba

Oliver is Sussex born and bred.  He took up playing the Tenor Horn as both his parents were brass musicians, and encouraged him to take brass lessons at his local school.  At the age of 7 he took his grade 1 on the tenor horn, and just one year later he had passed his grade 5.  Oliver was then offered a place at Junior Guildhall and began playing tuba.  Oliver was attending Guildhall for just a year when he was offered a place, with full scholarship, at both Cheetams and the Purcell School of Music.  He is now currently playing in a variety of ensembles, from small quartets through to brass bands and orchestras.
